French Cavalry Breakthrough at the Battle of Kulm by Richard Knotel The Battle of Kulm was a considerably bloody battle for both the French forces and the Coalition forces. While ending in a overall French defeat, with General Vandamme being captured and the remaining French troops withdrawing - the casualties inflicted on the Coalition forces were not insignificant. Facing attacks from all sides by Russians, Austrians and Prussians the French would lose between 13,000 and 25,000 men - the coalition forces would lose around 12,000 as a result of the valiant defence put up by Vandammes troops. Victory of Bluchers Cavalry Near Haynau on May 26, 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC) The Battle of Haynau was fought between Prussian cavalry under the command of General Hebhard Leberecht von Blicher and a French infantry division commanded by General Joseph Maison. The battle ended with a Prussian victory, with 20 squadrons of Landwehr cavalry attacking the French infantry by surprise, inflicting just short of 1500 casualties to the French. |

The French Retreat at Katzbach, August 26th 1813 By Richard Knotel (PC) Seen here, the French flee over the bridge of Nieder-Crayn during the heavy thunderstorm that took place at The Battle of the Katzbach River. Hundreds of men would drown in the flooding rivers of the Katzbach and the Raging Neisse on their retreat from the brutal battle, fought largely in melee combat as a result of damp musket powder. |
