The 33rd (Duke of Wellingtons) Regiment storming the Great Redoubt at the Battle of Alma, 20th September 1854 by David Rowlands (GL)

20 September 1854: The first battle of the Crimean War took place when the British and French attacked the Russians who held a formidable position on the steep slope above the River Alma. The 33rd was the centre regiment of the 1st Brigade, which was ordered to advance across the river and into the direction of the 'Great Redoubt', an entrenched position which the Russians had dug to form a protective earth bank. This position held as many as 16 battalions and 14 heavy guns. Marching steadily uphill, under artillery and musket fire, the 7th, 23rd and 33rd Regiments, despite losing their line formation, reached their objective and leapt into the Great Redoubt cheering as they did so. The Russian infantry were formed in a deep mass, and the two sides blazed away at each other at short range. Into the Valley of Death by Brian Palmer. (P)

After the charge up the valley and taking huge losses, The Light Brigade crashed through the Russian guns at the end of the valley. They were counter- charged by Russian cavalry. Shown here are the 11th and 8th Hussars engaging the Russian Uhlans and Dragoons. The losses to the Light Brigade were very high - 113 killed, and 134 wounded. General Pierre Bosquet after witnessing the charge remarked - It is magnificent but it is not war. The battle of Balaclava, finally ended leaving Balalcava still in British Hands.

Relief of the Light Brigade by Richard Caton Woodville (GL)

Relief of the Light Brigade by Richard Caton Woodville (GL)

Depicting the Light Brigade at the moment of reaching the Russian guns. Shown are the 11th Hussars and the 17th Lancers. The all time classic image of the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade which included the 17th lancers, who lead the charge. Lord Cardigan is shown on the left, dressed in his 11th Hussars uniform. The Light Brigade were being kept in reserve, after the successful charge of the heavy brigade, but the slow advance of the British Infantry to take advantage of the heavy brigades success had given the Russian forces time to take away Artillery pieces from captured redoubts. Raglan, after seeing this ordered the light brigade to advance rapidly to the front, follow the enemy and try to prevent the enemy carrying away the guns. This message taken by Captain Nolan, to Lord Lucan, the cavalry Commander. One of the Officers of Raglans Staff, urged Lucan, who could only see the main Russian Artillery position at the head of a valley. Lord Lucan rode over to Cardigan .........
